Awami League candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury is a burnt-out politician, a heroic freedom fighter. But in Chittagong politics, he is known as the late Mohiuddin Chowdhury. The group is now led by Deputy Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury in Awami League politics in divided Chittagong. On the other hand, Mohiuddin’s opposition leader is former mayor AJM Nasir. From the beginning of the campaign, the Awami League fell behind in the conflict between these two groups.
Due to the dispute between these two groups, the rebel candidate of Awami League for the post of ward councilor is scattered. Awami League has rebel candidates in 31 out of 41 wards. However, with the central intervention of the Awami League, most of the rebel candidates withdrew from the fray, but the rebel candidates are still in a precarious position in 8 wards. These eight wards are Bandar (Ward-36), Firingibazar (Ward-33), North Halishahar (Ward-26), South Agrabad (Ward-27), Bagh Muniram (Ward-15), East Shola Shahar (Ward-7) South Pahartali (Ward-1), North Pahartali (Ward-9), Lalkhan Bazar (Ward-14). In order to unite the divided Awami League and ensure that the aspirations of the people are reflected in the elections, the Awami League president is now looking for an around-the-clock election.
Awami League leader SM Kamal is staying in Chittagong on the instructions of Sheikh Hasina. His initiative has alleviated much of the internal strife. Awami League leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif also visited Chittagong. Biplob Barua is now staying in Chittagong. The Awami League president is always looking for the Chasik election. Due to his constant surveillance, new life has come in the campaign in Awami League. On the other hand, BNP has taken a different strategy in this election. They are not campaigning in the ward councilor. Rather it is secretly negotiating vote-sharing with rebel candidates. They have just centered all the campaigns around the mayoral candidate. Although the BNP is very weak organizationally in Chittagong, Dr. Shahadat Hossain has personal acceptance. Therefore, political analysts think that Chittagong is going to be a competitive election.
