Incumbent mayor Shafi Alam Yunus has been expelled for being a rebel candidate of the Awami League within the Moulvibazar Kulaura municipality election without getting party nomination again.
Upazila Awami League general secretary Asam Kamrul Islam confirmed the matter at a news conference at the party office of Kulaura Upazila Awami League on Thursday (January 7) evening.

Local leaders including Upazila Awami League president Rafiqul Islam Renu were also present at the news conference .
According to party sources, Shafi Alam Yunus became a rebel candidate in 2015 after he wasn’t nominated for the post of mayor of Kulaura municipality. He won by defeating the candidates of boat and paddy sheaf symbol. At that point, Shafi Alam Yunus was expelled from the post of Upazila Awami League member for violating party discipline as a rebel candidate. Later, after the overall amnesty of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Shafi Alam Yunus got the post of ‘Primary Member’.
Mayor Shafi Alam Yunus, Awami League leader Sipar Uddin Ahmed and Shafiul Alam Shafi were hoping to be nominated for the boat within the municipal elections to be persisted January 16. The Centre’s Nomination Board nominated Sipar Uddin Ahmed as its candidate within the Kulaura municipal election.
Meanwhile, Mayor Shafi Alam Yunus has become a rebel (independent) candidate within the election after being bereft of boat nomination again. Shafi Alam Yunuser was disqualified as a rebel (independent) candidate for disobeying the party’s decision.
At the news conference, the president and general secretary of the Upazila Awami League said that the membership of Shafi Alam Yunus has been canceled in accordance with Article 43 (11) of the party constitution. a replica of the cancellation of Shafi Alam Yunus’ membership has been sent to the district and central Awami League.
When Shafi Alam Yunus was contacted about this, he said, if he’s on the team, he will expel me. i do not know anything about this.
