Awami League mayoral candidate Abdul Quader Mirza has blocked the road in Noakhali’s Companiganj’s Basurhat municipality after boycotting a gathering on the code of conduct. On Sunday (January 3) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., he and his supporters staged an indication and rally at Mujib Chattar within the Upazila Sadar. Later, district Awami League president Khairul Anam Selim visited the spot and requested Abdul Quader Mirza and his followers to lift the blockade, police said.

According to the Upazila Election Office and party sources, the Upazila Election Office organized a gathering on the occasion of the Basurhat Municipal Election on January 16 at 10 am on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Khorshed Alam was the chief guest. District Election Officer Mohammad Rabiul Alam presided over the meeting. The special guest was the Superintendent of Police (SP) said. Alamgir Hossain and Upazila military officer (UNO) said. Ziaul Haque Mir. The meeting was attended by three candidates including Awami League and BNP for the post of mayor and councilor candidates of general and reserved wards.
Some people present at the meeting said that at one stage of his speech, Abdul Quader Mirza made various allegations against the councilor candidates for violating the election code of conduct, including razing his election posters and banners. He mentioned that his family feud with Bhabi was behind this and a few leaders including several MPs of the party were feeling it. At this point, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Khorshed Alam requested him (Abdul Quader Mirza) to speak about the election code of conduct. At one stage of the speech, the deputy commissioner wanted to understand whether he would say anything. Then Abdul Quader left the meeting room alleging obstruction of speech.
Some eyewitnesses said that after leaving the meeting, Abdul Quader visited the municipal office and shouted various allegations against the party leaders. At one stage he fell ill and was taken home. He took an edge at Bangabandhu Chattar at zero of the municipal town around 11 am. Thousands of leaders, activists, and supporters appeared there. They protested with brooms, burning tires, and blocking traffic. At this point, when Abdul Quader Mirza was lying there, his followers blocked the road and began protesting.
Addressing a rally at zero, Abdul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has established the people’s right to rice, but the proper to vote has not been established yet. Corruption, bidding has not stopped. Therefore, he will remain steadfast in his position until he’s assured of a good and impartial vote. If nobody is around, he will fight alone if necessary.
Abdul Quader Mirza Noakhali District Awami League General Secretary Noakhali-4 MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, his wife Kabirhat Upazila Parishad Chairman Shiuli Ekram, their son Sabab Chowdhury, Feni District Awami League General Secretary Nizam Hazari MP, Feni Municipality mayoral candidate Swapan Miaji, Mizanur Rahman Badal, former chairman of Kompaniganj Upazila Parishad, his nephew Fakhrul Islam Rahat, a member of Swadhinata Bankers Parishad, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police took action against him, sacked him and dismissed him.
Abdul Quader Mirza also expressed his excitement by mentioning his nephew (wife of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader).
Companiganj Upazila Awami League President Khizir Hayat Khan, General Secretary Nurnabi Chowdhury, and Upazila Juba League convener Azam Pasha Rumel and other local leaders also addressed the rally.
Upazila Awami League president Khizir Hayat Khan said district Awami League president AHM Khairul Anam Chowdhury visited Basurhat zero around 5 pm. He assured Abdul Quader Mirza of ensuring a neutral election also as resolving the allegations against the district committee after the election. Then Abdul Quader withdrew from the program. then the traffic on the road became normal.
Superintendent of Police. Alamgir Hossain said that in the blockade, district Awami League president Khairul Anam Selim reached the spot within the afternoon and requested Abdul Quader Mirza and his followers to lift the blockade. He assured the party general secretary Obaidul Quader and former district Awami League president Mahmudur Rahman Belayet that Mirza’s allegations would be resolved after talks.
The Superintendent of Police further said that the matter is extremely embarrassing. enforcement has tried its best to regulate things. within the evening things became normal within the presence of the district Awami League president.
Deputy Commissioner. Khorshed Alam Khan said that mayoral candidate Abdul Quader Mirza spoke on various issues for an extended time. At one point, when he was asked if he had anything to mention about the election code of conduct, he angrily left the venue. then, in his presence, his followers started protesting first ahead of the Upazila Parishad and afterward the road.
District Awami League general secretary MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury said, “I do not know why Abdul Quader Mirza is involving me.” I even have party forums to speak about party matters. So I do not want to discuss anyone outside.
