The capacity crisis of the prevailing line at Bangabandhu Bridge and therefore the construction of another new bridge to regulate the speed has become the demand of the time. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the development work of the project through a video conference at 10:30 am.
The Bangabandhu Bridge, one among the most important within the country and one among the most important within the subcontinent, was inaugurated on 23 June 1996 on the river Jamuna. Although it had been not planned at the start, later it had been added to the planning of the railway. The train has been running on the bridge since Midsummer Eve of that year; But it’s slow, somehow.
The bridge cracked for the primary time in 2006. From then on, the speed of rail traffic was also reduced. Now trains travel through this bridge at a maximum speed of 20 kmph. Although 22 trains were alleged to run a day, now 44 trains run with tons of risks.
To solve these complications, in 2016, the govt decided to create a specialized railway bridge 300 meters upstream north of the prevailing bridge over the river Jamuna. the twin gauge double-track bridge is going to be constructed at a distance of 4.8 km for train movement only.
Japan International Core-Operations Agency (JICA) will provide technical and financial assistance for the development of the bridge. the development cost has been estimated at Tk 18,061 crore. The eastern part of the bridge is going to be constructed by Obayashi Corporation, TOA Corporation, and JFE and therefore the western part is going to be constructed by a venture of IHI and SMCC. At the 2 ends of the bridge, a complete of 30 km of latest lines are going to be constructed with a zero-point 5 km viaduct, zero 7 km railway approach.
In the present Bangabandhu Multipurpose Bridge, thanks to the limitation of single-line crossing and therefore the complexity of crossing, an outsized amount of your time is wasted at the traffic light to cross the bridge. Once the development of the new double line bridge is completed, the train will cross the river Jamuna at a speed of 100 kmph. Effective and fast rail communication with the capital is going to be more intensive.
Policymakers expect the project to be completed by 2024. As a result, not only the interior railway but also the regional sub-regional and trans-Asian railways including SAARC BIMSTEC will benefit the people of the country. This strategic installation will have new possibilities financially also.
