In Bogra’s Sariakandi municipality, the Awami League candidate for the post of mayor has been changed during a few hours. Alamgir Shahi Sumon, the present mayor and general secretary of the Awami League, was re-nominated at a gathering of the Awami League’s government Representative Nomination Board on Friday night. This caused a wave of joy among his supporters. Sumon himself thanked the Prime Minister. However, Joint Secretary Matiur Rahman Moti was nominated because of the mayor during a form signed by the Prime Minister on Saturday morning. This caused a wave of happiness among Moti’s supporters but also anger and frustration among Sumon’s people.

It has been learned that the second phase of elections is going to be persisted on January 16 within the Sariakandi, Santahar, and Sherpur municipalities of Bogra. Alamgir Shahi Sumon, the present mayor of Sariakandi municipality, Abdus Sattar, president of Sherpur municipality, Abdus Sattar, president of Upazila Awami League and Ashraful Islam Montu, joint secretary of Upazila Awami League in Santahar municipality were declared the only candidates at a gathering of the government Nomination Board on Friday afternoon. The candidates confirmed their candidature during a letter signed by Barrister Biplob Barua, office secretary of the Central Awami League.
Meanwhile, during a letter signed by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday morning, Matiur Rahman Moti was made a boatman rather than Alamgir Shahi Sumon in Sariakandi Municipality. When the news was spread within the afternoon, there was a wave of joy among Moti’s supporters.
However, an inquiry in Sariakandi municipal area revealed that he (Sumon) was harassed thanks to a disagreement with the late Abdul Mannan, MP of Bogra-1 (Sariakandi-Sonatala) constituency. He was dismissed and joint secretary Abdul Khaleq Dulu was declared acting general secretary. Although the central leaders came and made Sumon the overall secretary again, it had been not accepted.
After the death of Abdul Mannan, his wife Sahadara Mannan became the Shilpi MP within the by-election. Sumon didn’t have an honest relationship with him either. Supporters’ idea: Moti has been made a boatman by misleading the Prime Minister and removing Alamgir Shahi Sumon from the post of mayor.
Sumon supporters, especially women voters, are blowing since Saturday afternoon. it’s rumored that they’ll join the movement on Sunday to demand a change of candidate.
Asked why the change was made, the party’s district member lecturer Kamrul Huda Ujjal said, “This change has been taken into consideration by the party president and therefore the selection board.”
Meanwhile, the name of the BNP nominated candidate in Sariakandi municipality wasn’t announced albeit the election was almost on the doorstep. consistent with the district BNP office, the BNP candidates in Sariakandi Upazila are going to be finalized within the next few days.
Sabina Yasmin Baby, the wife lately Mayor Alhaj Tipu Sultan, picked up the nomination form because of the BNP’s nominee. Advocate Shariful Islam Hira and heroic insurgent Ali Azgar also picked up nomination forms for the post of mayor.
