Elections will be held in 31 municipalities in the fifth phase on February 28. The Bangladesh Awami League has finalized 36 candidates in four Upazila and three Union Parishad elections.

A meeting of the Awami League’s Local Government Representative Nomination Board was held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganobhaban at 11 am on Saturday (January 30). The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President of the Nomination Board and President of the Awami League.
At the end of the meeting, the list of candidates was announced in a press release signed by the party’s office secretary Barrister Biplob Barua. According to the list of candidates, Hakibur Rahman in Houragach Municipality of Rangpur, Mostafizur Rahman in Joypurhat Municipality, Abu Obaidul Hasan in Bogra Municipality, Abdur Rashid in Chapainawabganj Municipality, Charghat Municipality in Rajshahi. Ashraful Alam in Kaliganj Municipality, Rafiqul Islam in Keshabpur Municipality of Jessore, Haider Gani Khan in Jessore Municipality, Mohammad Moniruzzaman in Bhola Municipality of Bhola District, Md. Char Fashion Municipality. Morshed, Kishoreganj Bhairab Municipality. Iftekhar Hossain, Manikganj Singair Municipality Abu Naeem. Bashar, Gazipur Kaliganj Municipality SM Rabin Hossain, Madaripur District Madaripur Municipality. Khalid Hossain, Awlad Hossain Khan in Shibchar Municipality, Farin Hossain in Dewanganj Municipality of Jamalpur, Abdul Quader Sheikh in Islampur Municipality, Mirza Golam Kibria (Kabir) in Madarganj Municipality, Mohammad Chanowar Hossain in Jamalpur Municipality, Nandayanbainer in Mymensingh. Selim, Nair Kabir in Brahmanbaria Municipality, Awlad Hossain in Matlab North Municipality of Chandpur District, Haji Abdul Latif in Shahrashti Municipality, Gias Uddin Rubel Bhat in Raipur Municipality of Laxmipur, Giasvas Uddin in Mirsarai Municipality, Chittagong. Shahjahan Sikder has been nominated as the mayor of Rangunia municipality.
Besides, Yasin Ali has been removed as the chairman of Paba Upazila Parishad of Rajshahi, and Shailkupa Upazila Parishad has been removed as the chairman of Jhenaidah. Shefali Begum, Shahidul Islam has been nominated for the post of Madhukhali Upazila Chairman of Faridpur, and Abul Kalam Azad has been nominated for the post of Chairman of Debidwar Upazila Parishad of Comilla.
Delwar Hossain has been nominated for the post of Dabluganj Union Parishad Chairman of Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali, Rabeya Begum for the post of Gerad Union Parishad Chairman of Sadar Upazila of Faridpur, and Selim Khan for the post of Chairman of Laxmipur Model Union Parishad of Sadar Upazila of Chandpur.
The Awami League distributed nomination papers for 31 municipalities, four Upazilas, and three union parishads from January 22 to January 28.
Earlier, on January 17 and January 19, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the local government elections.
In the fifth phase, voting will be held in 31 municipalities on February 28. According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, nomination papers can be submitted to the Returning Officer for this election till February 2, the selection will be done on February 4. Thereafter, nomination papers can be withdrawn till February 11. Voting will take place on February 28 at the end of the campaign. On that day, continuous voting will continue from 8 am to 4 pm. Of these, 31 municipalities will vote on electronic voting machines (EVMs).
EVM voting took place on December 28 in 24 municipalities of the first phase scheduled; Then on January 16, the vote was held in 61 municipalities of the second phase. In the third phase, voting will be held on January 30 in 64 municipalities, and in the fourth phase, voting will be held on February 14 in 58 municipalities.
